West Pikeland halts plans to sell building housing SALT Performing Arts

West Pikeland Township supervisors voted unanimously on Oct. 26 to rescind a decision to advertise the municipal building at 1645 Art School Road for sale, following public opposition over the potential displacement of SALT Performing Arts. The township is seeking legal guidance on whether it can require a prospective buyer to honor SALT’s 10-year license agreement, signed in 2023 in exchange for approximately $400,000 in building improvements. The agreement provides fixed rent for the theater’s use of part of the building, where it has operated since 2014. Township officials had proposed selling the property to help fund the purchase of a larger police facility at 1001 Kimberton Road. SALT president Lauren McComas said the organization is exploring options with Historic Yellow Springs to potentially acquire the property but hopes the township will preserve its existing agreement if a purchase is not possible.
