Bensalem council OKs tax incentive to lure national manufacturer

Bensalem Township Council unanimously approved a resolution and district designation for a Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance (LERTA) abatement on a vacant, 19.5-acre property at 4626 Somerton Road in Trevose. The move is a step toward luring a nationally recognized, fourth-generation, family-owned manufacturer that would relocate its headquarters there and bring up to 300 jobs. The company’s name is being withheld so it can inform employees after approval, but officials described its CEO as eager to be a community partner. A LERTA typically provides a 10-year exemption on the added value of property improvements while the owner continues paying taxes on the baseline land value. While the project is cited as a $50 million investment, state Sen. Frank Farry (R-6) said total spending on purchase, construction and equipment will likely be at least $150 million. Solicitor Joseph Pizzo noted that the school district and county must each independently adopt similar resolutions, and that if either declines, the project could be jeopardized, adding that “we’re nowhere near done.”
