Middletown Township Council has given a preliminary go-ahead for Rose Tree Media School District’s planned early learning center and artificial turf field additions. The approximately 120,000-square-foot school proposed for 14 acres at Rose Tree Road and Route 352 would accommodate approximately 800 full-day kindergarten and first-grade students. A second part of the project will add artificial turf fields at the adjoining Penncrest High School property. The district said the new school is needed to relieve overcrowding in its four elementary schools, some of which are now using modular classrooms. Since 2020 more than 600 new homes have been built in the district, and officials expect to see growth continue. The K-1 project is projected to cost $84 million. Before the tentative approval, council laid out 31 conditions the school district would need to comply with for final township approval. Township solicitor John Walko said the conditions include complying with recommendations from township engineers and the sewer authority. The district hopes to open the new school in time for the 2029-2030 school year.
