Bristol Township eyes EIT increase, property tax relief

Published Friday, October 30, 2026

Bristol Township officials are weighing a rise in the earned income tax (EIT) from 0.5% to 1% for 2027, a move that would match most Bucks County municipalities. Only Bristol Borough and Lower Makefield do not levy an EIT. Consultant Keystone Municipal Solutions told council that flat revenues and workforce costs rising about 8% annually since 2021 point to a roughly $3.1 million deficit in 2027, despite nearly $22 million in reserves entering 2026. Because Pennsylvania’s reciprocity system lets taxes paid to other municipalities follow workers home, an estimated $4 million to $4.3 million could be redirected to the township. Officials say about 70% of residents already pay at least 1% elsewhere, but the tax would be new for roughly 30% of working residents, including the 2,900 who live and work in the township. To soften the impact, the township is studying a millage reduction, income-based waivers and other options.
