Meat-processing company JBS announced in June that it would shutter beef harvesting and processing at its 149-year-old Souderton plant. A move that threatened roughly 1,500 union jobs, 250 management positions and potentially over 2,000 jobs region-wide when accounting for suppliers, ranchers and local businesses. In August, however, JBS revealed it will instead invest more than $30 million over the next decade to convert the facility into a value-added, case-ready operation, preserving about 400 jobs. Harvesting and processing at the facility will still end on Aug. 14 as planned. State and union leaders called it a meaningful, if partial, win, since workers affected by the harvesting wind-down still face a difficult transition.
