Restrictive racial covenants in deeds are no longer allowed or enforceable, thanks to federal law and state protections. But they still exist in the deeds of properties across the region and the country. Many homebuyers and owners are horrified when they find racist language in their own properties’ documents. Pennsylvania passed a law last December that allows property owners to file a one-page form that gets attached to the deed and disavows and nullifies discriminatory language in it.
