New Hope officials have been working on a proposed parking garage since 2020, after a consulting group’s 2018 report said that inadequate parking was the top threat to businesses and residents in the tiny borough. The multi-level garage was proposed at a site just north of the Union Square complex, and the idea was reportedly supported by business and resident surveys at the time. Community support has dwindled since then due to frustration residents feel with the original ad hoc parking garage committee. The project came to an abrupt end when a motion — not originally on the agenda — was made following a boisterous public comment session to end the contract with the parking garage consultant and reject a $1.75 million state grant.
