There are two similar projects that have shown up in our news briefs in recent months. Both are massive infrastructure projects that involve construction atop busy highways, but they are separate projects. Here’s a quick overview:
Chinatown Stitch over I-676 (Vine Street Expressway) — A $160 million project to build a highway cap over I-676 between 10th and 13th streets to heal community divisions. It will include public green space, improved sidewalks, and better connections for pedestrians, cyclists and transit. It’s currently in the planning stage, with construction slated for 2027.
The Park at Penn’s Landing over I-95 — A $329 million project to build an 11.5-acre park over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard, reconnecting Center City with the Delaware River waterfront. The new park will have gardens, play areas, a pavilion and a new pedestrian bridge at South Street. Construction began in 2023, and the park is expected to open around 2029.
