Voters didn't only select candidates on Nov. 8. In several communities, they approved or rejected referendums that affected taxes, land use and the structure of local government.Here's a quick run-down of some of the decisions reached in the Philadelphia suburbs:
Yardley Borough (Bucks County) -- Residents voted against a ballot proposal to reduce the size of the borough council from seven to five members. (via Yardley Patch)Newtown Township (Bucks County) -- Voters supported the imposition of an additional 0.5 mills of real estate tax annually to support ambulance, rescue and other emergency services. (via WHYY)West Sadsbury Township (Chester County) -- A majority of voters said "No" to the proposed continuation of a tax that funds open space preservation. The township asked voters whether to keep the 0.7% tax rate as is for preservation efforts. Voters chose to repeal the tax instead. (via TotalVote)Westtown Township (Chester County) -- Voters overwhelmingly approved a pair of tax increases to fund the purchase of much of the 308-acre Crebilly Farm property for preservation. The earned income tax will increase from 1% to 1.08% and the real estate tax will go from 3.5 mills to 3.92 mills. (via Inquirer)Limerick Township (Montgomery County) -- Residents opposed increasing the earned income tax by 0.25% to preserve open space, according to Montgomery County’s unofficial election results. The township would have used the money to acquire more open space and historic land and to create more recreational areas, park land, and trails. (via WHYY)Towamencin Township (Montgomery County) -- Voters approved a government study commission that would consider the merits of adopting a home rule charter, a process that has been promoted as a chance to overturn the recent controversial sale of the sewer system. (via The Reporter)Whitpain Township (Montgomery County) -- About 63% of voters approved of increasing the Earned Income Tax (EIT) by 0.06% with the revenue being used to preserve and maintain open space.
